All articles Microsoft’s Ballmer sees a silver lining in Windows Phone’s limited share ————————— Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, speaking at the company’s financial anlyst meeting yesterday said that Microsoft has ”almost no share” in mobile devices, but expressed the optimistic view that ”anything [where] we have a low market share sounds like upside opportunity to me”. Ballmer went on to say that the Nokia deal is one way for Microsoft to make the most of this opportunity because it allows Microsoft to ”capture the gross margin upside” (i.e. more of the profit from selling each device). By talking about potential and opportunity, rather than results, especially after expending a great deal of effort and investment in mobile, is a blunt acknowledgement that Microsoft’s mobile strategy to date has failed to perform. It also implicitly acknowledges the amount of work Microsoft has to do to become relevant in mobile. The question for investors is whether Microsoft is going to be able to bridge the gap to its competitors.
